Interview with Anah Turner Vega
Hi, I’m Aerianah Turner-Vega, Owner of Agev Co. Nestled in San Diego’s Barrio Logan neighborhood, a beautiful store front location was born by the name of Agev Co, which is a black-owned woman-run storefront.
Agev Co. is an acronym that means Amiable, Grounded, Empowered, and Vibrant. A variety of raw crystals, handmade jewelry, art, home decor, and more are charged in the San Diego sun and cleansed by mother nature’s night light, each piece brings positivity and love that can truly be felt by each person that the pieces call to.
What projects are you currently working on? Always thinking of new items to create. Mostly everything is handmade by my wife and I. She does the realistic portraits and has even started to work on jewelry. Lately though, we’ve been making necklaces, trying out different wire. and styles.
How has the pandemic affected or shifted your practice? It shifted things a lot for us. We are fortunate to have a website, however, we miss the interactions and the people. This pandemic has made it to where we had to re-evaluate how we run the shop, from limiting our interactions, and focusing more on online sales as my wife is immunocompromised (with Lupus).
What has your journey been like as a creative/artist/small business-owner? It’s been a fun one for sure. While I do hand wrap a lot of the pieces, I am also an abstract artist. I love working with watercolor, acrylic, palette knifes, resin, etc. I also love making music. Creating is literally who I am and I really love doing it.
Do you have any tips for up-and-coming, or rising artists/creatives? Stay true to yourself, find out what makes your soul happy and stick with it. It’s always about the joy life/art brings. <3
